Communicating with the souls of autistic people

via Facilitated Communication (FC)

THE PHENOMENON

In 1985 an Australian researcher discovered an unconventional method of communicating with brain-damaged people -- facilitated communication. These people are incapable of expressing themselves verbally since most of them are “dumb” or brain-damaged. They were, however, able to express themselves and convey their will and information through pointing with their finger at letters on an alphabet board.

The child is asked a question verbally, and in order to receive his response, his hand is held above the board and is pressed in the opposite direction. The child then pushes his hand toward the board and points to a letter. (Even children who are paralyzed and people in a coma as a result of brain damage were capable of doing this.) The hand is again lifted above the board (the child cannot do this himself since he is paralyzed or lacks the necessary motor functions) and he points to another letter. When these letters are combined to form words that eventually form sentences conveying meaning. When this method was discovered in Australia, many disputed it and the researcher was even sued in court, since there was no natural explanation for the phenomenon, for these children had never learned to read or write because of their mental limitations, so how could they form sentences that contained meaning? The accusers were certain that the researcher had pulled off a trick or deception.  

The court investigated this phenomenon thoroughly and proved the integrity of the researcher. The phenomenon was shown to be true {valid} and free of deception. The court also proved that it was accomplished without the effect of telepathy from the researcher through a trial in which an item that was unknown to the researcher but revealed to the members of the court was placed in a closed box. The child was then asked to name the contents of the box, and gave the correct answer.  

Close examination of the details of this phenomenon reveals evidence of not just one miraculous phenomenon, but of a string of such miracles, all of which overstep boundaries of nature. Let us enumerate them one by one:  

A. COMPLETE LANGUAGE PROFICIENY WITH NO PRIOR STUDY.

 The miraculous phenomenon that immediately strikes the eye is the ability of these brain-damaged individuals to choose letters and form words and sentences with definite and profound meaning as if they were seasoned and expert writers, even though they had never learned how to read and write. And they are able to accomplish this with an extremely low level of intelligence.  

B. COMPLETE PROFICIENCY IN ALL LANGUAGES.

 All children tested have recognized all the languages used to communicate with them and are expert in all of them, including the alphabet and grammar of each language. When this phenomenon was first discovered, it was thought that the children had somehow absorbed knowledge of the alphabet from their surrounding environment, but no "natural" explanation was given as to how they were able to combine the letters to form sentences or how they had become proficient in languages to which they had never been exposed.  

C.  COMMUNICATION INDEPENDENT OF THE SENSE OF VISION.

 When pointing at the letters, the handicapped person of his own volition always turns his head away from the board. (In addition, there is no requirement that the letters be arranged in any particular fashion; any order may be used as long as it includes the entire alphabet.) In their efforts to rationally explain the phenomenon, scientists have claimed that the child sees from an angle. However, this method has been used successfully even while the subject's eyes are closed. (In any case, the eyes of a subject who is able to read must be closed, since otherwise he becomes confused and his reply is influenced by his external physical abilities rather than his soul.)  

It is noteworthy that even brain-damaged blind children can communicate in this way. (One such child was asked how he knew where the letters were located, and replied that he could reply because he had a picture of the board in his mind.)  

Communication can also be established with comatose subjects, or those in a chronic, "vegetative" state. They perceive the alphabet board, but not through the medium of their physical eyes and when their hand is held, they push it in the direction of the letters on the board.  

D. COMMUNICATION  INDEPENDENT OF THE SENSE OF HEARING.   

It was mentioned above that this form of communication was performed with people in a state of coma. Although their sense of hearing was not functioning, they were able to give precise replies to questions as if they were hearing. Similarly persons deaf are able to reply to questions they are asked orally.

And in general, all brain-damaged persons without exception do not need to hear the questions they are asked. It was sufficient to think the questions, and these invalids were able to answer precisely by pointing to the correct letters.  

E. UNLIMITED POWER OF RETENTION.

When they are given books, they just leaf quickly through the pages. And  when they are asked about the contents, they know everything written in the book.  

One mother related that her autistic son reads the morning newspaper in a few seconds and afterwards can relate it without missing a detail, including the advertising. He is able to recount such picayune details as telephone numbers. A girl told me she has an autistic brother who can talk. When their mother bought a cookbook, the brother leafed through the pages in a few seconds, and since then when she cooks turns to him and he gives her the ingredients of each recipe.

There is a video film produced by Syracuse University which shows brain-damaged children reading more rapidly than normal children. When they were asked how they know how to read, they reply that the pages are filmed in their minds and they know what is written in them. This kind of ability is not found in normal people.  

F.  RAPID COMPUTABILITY.

Parents of brain-damaged children told me that they can compute mathematical exercises with 5-digit numbers and come up with the answer immediately. The Syracuse University film describes this phenomenon, saying that these children's computation abilities are far above those of normal children.  

G. KNOWLEDGE OF DIVINE TRUTH.

All the children without exception knew the truth concerning the Creator of the World, His Omnipresence, Providence, Glory and Awesomeness without their having heard this previously. They are acquainted with all the happenings in the Heavenly Court of Judgment, as will be explained later.

There is no need to "believe" me regarding the truth of these phenomena. Since  any person  can prove for himself how all these phenomena apply to  every brain-damaged child with the aid of this method  of communication. Almost any person is able to communicate in this way with most brain-damaged people who are willing to cooperate with him.

However, not every one will consent immediately. Sometimes only a experienced facilitator  can make the connection. Also, in most cases, the child's body presents an impediment which is not easily overcome, and often only a trained person can do it. Whether communication is established or not depends on the character of the connector, and if he has the proper personality. This is especially the case when establishing contact with a child who has never communicated before. However, a child who is used to communicating in this way will usually be able to communicate with almost anyone.

I, personally, together with a large group of rabbis, were present many times when communication of this kind was made, and we saw for ourselves the truth of this phenomenon. Not only did we see the results with our own eyes, but we ourselves communicated with the children in this fashion. We felt how the child was pushing his hand in the direction of the correct letter. The technical side of this form of communication is well known in the world and much has been documented in scientific journals and video films.  I possess extensive scientific material that testifies to it.  

I received  part of the information which appears here from the woman who brought this method to Israel a year and a half ago. Her experience did not involve a mere few children. Almost all such cases in the country reached her, and her rich experiences involves many hundreds of such cases in Israel and around the world. Let us examine the words of our sages who enlightened our eyes to reach a true understanding of this phenomenon.  

UNDERSTANDING THE PHENOMENON

 We are considering a phenomenon that science  has no idea how to deal with, Even though science did try to explain away a part of the phenomenon (i.e. the children's knowledge was absorbed from the environment-an explanation that we will soon see from their own words is insufficient), it had no explanation for these children acknowledging divine judgment, their previous sins, their previous incarnations, etc. This information was obviously not absorbed from their surroundings. It is not usual for normal families to speak about such matters, and even

If one can come up with a few families who perhaps do bring up these topics on occasion, how is it possible that all the children without exception talk about this subject? Even more, how can "absorption from the surroundings" explain their ability to communicate in several languages when generally in their own homes only one language was spoken?!  

Similarly, there is no scientific explanation for their blind communication in which they do not look at the alphabet board. We already mentioned that scientists claimed that they see the board from an angle, but how do we explain this phenomenon when truly blind children or children whose eyes are covered communicate in this way? Also science cannot explain how this form of communication can work with deaf persons, who reply correctly as if they possessed normal hearing.

It is our contention that these puzzles result from a mistake in our understanding of intelligence. It is generally thought that the ability to learn and absorb depends on the physical brain, so that in cases of brain damage the ability to learn and absorb as well as all other physical functions are consequently damaged. In our view this conceptions is mistaken.   

The brain's function has been defined by Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler in his book Michtav M'Eliyahu (v.4, p.163):  

"the brain’s purpose is to be a screen and blind for a person’s, nefsesh(personality) to ensure that he does  not receive knowledge which is beyond his body’s limitations in time and space or which he does not accord with his deeds and efforts in the world of free will and action.”   

Thus, the brain is not the source and locus of thought but rather a screen and sieve for excluding the information that reaches the person. This is because the ability of the soul to think and absorb information is not limited neither in quantity of information nor in processing speed by material or temporal factors. Only when the soul is enshrouded in the brain do its powers become subject to the same qualitative and quantitative limitations as other time- and spatially-bound material bodies. Specifically in cases where the brain is damaged and unable to function normally we can obtain a glimpse at the wondrous world of the soul, free from any of its usual physical confinements and concealments.   

To explain why prophecy was given to fools, Rav Dessler writes:  

"Their screen is not as strong." A baby is able to see from one end of the world to the other and to absorb the entire Torah in such a short time {Tractate Niddah Page 30:} because "these perceptions certainly did not come to him via his brain, but are rather internal perceptions which constantly overflow the soul unbounded by limitations of time and space, and independent of any medium. They come from the Upper World, from the Divine source of knowledge."

 The Torah teaches that when a baby is born, "and angel comes and clips his mouth," meaning that the power of external nature strikes him and causes him to forget all of the Torah. From then on, the wellsprings of internal perceptions that overflow in him are closed up and he must relearn everything through personal efforts using the vehicle of his brain."  

Rabbi Dessler's remarkable observations provide the key to understanding the wondrous phenomenon observable in particular in the world of brain-damaged children, where the soul lies revealed to us unencumbered by the screens that impede the perceptions of normal people. When the receptacle of the brain is incomplete, lacking speech and other higher faculties, the soul does not lose its prodigious abilities as it usually does upon uniting with the body. Its ability to transcend its materialistic camouflage is enhanced and it comes closer to being revealed in all its radiance.

This explains these children's astonishing knowledge in every field, and particularly in heavenly matters. Later it will be shown that our explanation for this phenomenon receives double reinforcement from the words of the handicapped themselves.   On one occasion, the communicator asked a 9-year old autistic child "Is it true that you receive your ability to write from my power?" and the child replied "Yes." He was then asked, "If so, perhaps you are only reading my thoughts?" He replied, No, you are merely my keyboard, but I am arranging the words in a certain order.  

To sum up, an alternate method of communication was discovered with which to communicate with disabled children who are unable to communicate via conventional means. Their souls are lacking the usual facilities  that are available to everyone to express himself and function normally and there is a lack of communication between the soul and the body. Since the soul is not revealed here normally through the trappings of the body, it is an opportunity to become acquainted with it in its pristine state.  

The answers that we receive from brain-damaged individuals are astonishing, "Internal perceptions that constantly overflow the soul unbounded by limitations of time and space, and independent of any medium. They come from the upper World , from the Divine source of knowledge.   and conclusively prove that there is an Overseer who metes out justice, that the human soul is divine, and that its total desire is to fulfill the will of its Creator. The incredible qualities of the soul are revealed to us. Its absorption capacity is far greater than the greatest genius in the world, since its capacity to communicate and absorb is unlimited.    As has been shown above, this form of communication ties us directly to the   soul without the interference of the  body. We took advantage of this fact to clarify several important facts concerning the Upper Worlds. We are  able to prove to all those whose faith is not firm enough, to believe  that there is a Creator who oversees and metes out justice with these concepts affirmed and clarified in an amazing manner that breaches the boundaries of nature to remove all doubts regarding the principles of our faith.  

'VOICES" FROM THE WORLD OF THE SOUL  DIVULGE THE TRUTH   

We are bringing here, respected readers, the contents of discussions which, we held with brain- damaged individuals. Their words as they "wrote" them on a communications board by pointing to the appropriate letters to form the sentences they wished to express are precisely quoted.  

(For the sake of brevity, the following abbreviations were used: AU - autistic, RE - retarded, CP - cerebral palsy (a disease which involves paralysis of the entire body and severe mental retardation), DS - Downs' Syndrome, MI - mentally ill.)  

To the question: "Is G-d's existence obvious to you?" everyone without exception (including those born to secular families) answered with definitude, “Of course! Without a doubt!”  

To the question: "How is His existence obvious to you?" we received the following answers:  

AU, age 14: I am aware of G-d's existence better than you, because I already was in the world above.  

As we shall see further on, all of them without exception know that they had been previously in the world, and  what was the sin which they had committed , for which they had to return to experience this suffering and how they will become rectified. If so, it is not surprising is that the truth is obvious to them. They all experienced heavenly justice, and they recognize it as such and can recall it.  

DS, age 7:Because I was already in Gehinom, and even there, the wicked know that there is a G-d.

AU, age 11: Because I was a wicked person and I saw what is heaven and what is hell.  

AU, age 11:Because I am a reincarnation, and once in the past I constructed a life of vanity and suffered. It is the will of the Almighty that souls like me should know two worlds.  

The children say that they didn't come to the world to observe mitzvos, since they had already observed them. Rather they came to suffer because of the sins they had done in a previous lifetime, and for this purpose they do not need  intelligence any more. Since they do not possess free will, they are aware of everything and remember all the punishments they suffered, the heavenly court of judgment, and are  aware of both the lower and upper worlds.  

Question to an AU, age 14: "Do you see the divine presence (shechina)?" (I thought of this question upon remembering the words of the Meshech Chochma that the soul is able to see the shechina but  the body conceals it.)   Answer (ibid.): Yes!  

Question(continuing the conversation):Then  why don't we see it?  

Answer: Because I am composed primarily of soul with just a small element of body. But your entire awareness is by means of the body.  

Answer (CP, age 13): I am not enwrapped in a healthy body, therefore I can feel the shechina with my divine soul.  

Answer (DS, age 7): I feel divine existence more than you because there is disunity between the physical elements of my body."  

A normal person has his physical elements complete and they work together in unity. They are connected and coordinated together. Since the physical parts are united, the physical trappings totally serve as a screen and complete  block to the spiritual world.  Whereas the brain-damaged have their physical components damaged and total unification between all of its parts is lacking. Their impediment is not absolute and it is  therefore possible to sense the spiritual world.  

Question to a 7 year old CP: Are you aware of G-d's existence more than me?  

Answer: Yes, because I am pure.  

Question: What do you mean when you say you are "pure"?  

Answer: I have no sins.  

Answer of a 11-year old AU: I am not full of falsehood like you; the truth is clear to me like the sun.  

In the presence of a distinguished entourage of rabbis, we asked:  

Is your awareness of G-d's existence greater than those present?  

Answer (MI, age 14): No!  

Question: Why is that?  

Answer (ibid.): Even a person undergoing reincarnation cannot hope to reach the level of people who study Torah.

Answer (CP, age 6): Because I can't study, I'm not able to reach the level of the righteous person sitting here.  

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN LIFE  

On the question : "What in your opinion is the most important thing in life?"  

First answer (14-year old AU): Hashem created the world and every Jew is obligated to recognize Him and crown Him. One can learn to recognize Hashem from the wonders of nature.  

This ties in with the Rambam in Hilchos Yesodei Torah 2:2 "What is the way by which one comes to love and fear Him? When a person meditates on His deeds and His great wondrous creations, and sees from them his wisdom which is immeasurable, and never-ending , he will immediately love, extol, glorify and long greatly to know the great G-d."  

Second answer (RE child): To acknowledge Hashem and His sovereignty, for this is the only link that brings one to the world to come.  

Third answer (AU, age 7): We have to have complete faith in G-d, and to do acts of kindness.  

Fourth answer (9 year old CP): It's important to remember to give thanks to G-d.  

One should pay attention to the fact that even a child who has undergone much suffering realizes that the most important thing in life is to give thanks to G-d. Despite his personal suffering, he understands that everything that befalls a soul emanates from G-d's love that has the soul's welfare and rectification in mind.  

Fifth answer (DS, age 7): To love Hashem and every Jew.  

When later describing his sin, this child mentioned that he had spoken slanderously and felt no love for his fellow Jew. According to this, it is self-understood why he sees this commandment as particularly important - to rectify what he had previously spoiled by not loving every Jew.  

Sixth answer: To love Hashem no matter what your circumstances, as difficult as they may be.   This answer was given by a blind, paralyzed, retarded child.  

THE SOUL WANTS TO DO THE WILL OF ITS CREATOR

"My G-d, the soul You gave me is pure. You created it, You formed it, You placed it in me, and You are watching over it in me." (Morning prayers)  

A 14 year retarded child studied with my student. When the student came to learn with him and the child's brothers went down to play in the courtyard, and the child appeared tense and unable to concentrate. When he was asked if he wanted to go down and play with the others, he replied verbally "Yes!" But when he was asked to reply on the communications board, he wrote "No!" He was asked again, and again he replied verbally "Yes!" But when he was asked a second time to reply on the communications board, he banged with all his strength "NO!"  

He was asked why verbally he answers "yes" but on the board he writes "no"? He answered through the board, “Because the soul wants to learn Torah!”   We witness here an astonishing scenario of the struggle between the body and soul, in which each is trying to pull in its own direction - the soul for Torah and the body for its pleasures.  

A person whose body is complete only senses his physical needs. His soul is unable to express its needs since its connection to our consciousness is only by way of the body. In a schizophrenic body, both the body and the soul in its purity can be seen. From this we can learn about our soul and its true needs only when it is free of the body's concealment.  

When the brain-damaged children are asked what they want to do, all of them reply that they want to study Gemora (One asked to study Jewish law.) When they are asked what they would like to study in addition to Gemora, they all reply "Chumash!"  

Retarded children from secular families express in even extreme terms the thirst of the soul for Torah study and prayer since these needs are not being supplied by their families. They also didn't stop speaking about their anguish at the fact that their parents do not observe mitzvos, and they don’t stop  thinking of ways how they might make them repent.  

Despite the sad state in which these disabled children were in, the soul doesn’t feel any physical lack. I myself was present during communication with a man who had suffered from a tumor in his brain and was presently lying in a hospital bed in a vegetative state. When he was asked "What are you lacking?" he replied, Physically, nothing. (Despite his difficult physical state in which he could do nothing for himself, and his depressing environment, he felt he lacked for nothing!) And when he was asked, "So what are you actually lacking?" he answered,” a partner to study Gemora.”  

A 11-year old autistic child born to secular parents related during the High Holidays how he is concerned about his father because he does not observe mitzvos. I am afraid of the punishment awaiting him. I'm worrying about my father since he isn't repenting.  

During this period, he studied all day to help rectify his father, but refused to communicate with his mother, because "it's a shame to waste the time on it." (i.e., he wished to utilize every minute during the High Holidays to help rectify his father.) On Yom Kippur, he was quiet the entire day.  

It must be mentioned that this child is very active and restive. There's hardly a second during the day that he isn't jumping and shouting, and when he sits quietly, it is almost considered a miracle.  

Afterwards he told the communicator that he was calm because he had rectified his father. And when she asked him for how much time he had accomplished this, he answered, Only today.  

The child would punish his father to prevent him from violating Shabbos. For instance, he would refuse to relate to him. Recently he drew a picture of his father, and when the communicator asked him why he did it, he replied, Because I love him very much, because his soul wants to repent. When the communicator queried him that just a short time earlier he had related to his father differently, and what has changed now, he answered, He read many books about the life of the wretched, unfortunate secularists.  

Another time his mother related that he sat in the home of his aunt and uncle for two hours without saying a sound. Everyone appreciated this (as was mentioned above, he generally is hyperactive and cannot sit quietly a minute). He later told the communicator that the reason for the calm was, I rectified Shula (the aunt) because she transgresses Shabbos and I'm very afraid of this.  

Question: Will this rectification help her always?  

Answer: It didn't help for everything, but it helped partly for the day on which I was working for her soul.  

Question: How did it help her?  

Answer: It helped because I prayed such a prayer that it broke through the heavens.  

The holy Zohar uses in several places the expression that "prayer breaks through all the heavens"  

Question: Only you or any other autistic can do this?

Answer: Every autistic can do it.
